The constellation Andromeda is a story of vanity, sacrifice, heroism, and cosmic redemption and revolves around Andromeda, the daughter of Queen Cassiopeia and King Cepheus of Ethiopia. Cassiopeia boasted that her daughter's beauty surpassed that of the Nereids, the sea nymphs favoured by the sea god Poseidon. In retaliation for Cassiopeia's arrogance, Poseidon sent Cetus to ravage Aethiopia as punishment.
To appease the wrath of Poseidon and save their kingdom, Cassiopeia and Cepheus consulted an oracle which advised them to sacrifice Andromeda to Cetus. They chained her to a rock as an offering and as fate would have it, the hero Perseus was flying nearby after slaying the Gorgon Medusa. He saw Andromeda bound to the rock and fell in love with her. Perseus struck a deal with Cepheus, promising to save Andromeda in exchange for her hand in marriage. Using Medusa's head, which turned anyone who looked at it to stone, Perseus confronted and defeated Cetus, saving Andromeda from her grim fate.
