In Egyptian mythology, this noble metal formed the bones of the gods while their flesh was made from gold and the early association of gold with the sun naturally led to silver holding a unique connection to the moon. In mythology, Sagittarius is often associated with the centaur Chiron, a wise and noble figure known for his teachings and healing abilities, and sometimes with Crotus, a satyr celebrated for his musical talents and the son of Pan.

One of the most famous stories involving Chiron is his accidental wounding by Heracles, who shot him with a poisoned arrow. Despite his healing skills, Chiron could not cure himself due to his immortality. To end his suffering, he chose to give up his immortality in exchange for Prometheus, who was being punished by the gods. In honour of his sacrifice, Zeus placed Chiron among the stars as the constellation Sagittarius.
