Ursa Major, known as the Great Bear, is steeped in Greek mythology and culture where it is associated with the story of Callisto and her son Arcas.

Zeus, the king of the gods, fell in love with Callisto, a beautiful nymph and companion of the goddess Artemis and seduced her while disguised as Artemis. When Artemis discovered Callisto's pregnancy, she was enraged and transformed Callisto into a bear.

Years later, Callisto's son, Arcas, unknowingly encountered her in her bear form while hunting. As he prepared to kill her, Zeus intervened to prevent the tragedy. He transformed both Callisto and Arcas into constellations, placing them in the sky as Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, respectively. This myth symbolizes the bond between mother and son, as they remain close to each other in the night sky.
