Cassiopeia, the queen of Aethiopia, known for her exceptional beauty, vanity and her excessive pride, boasted that she and her daughter, Andromeda, were more beautiful than the Nereids, the sea nymphs who were considered the epitome of beauty. This arrogance angered Poseidon, the god of the sea, who decided to punish her for this hubris.
To exact his revenge, Poseidon sent the sea monster Cetus to ravage the coast of Aethiopia. In desperation, Cassiopeia and her husband, King Cepheus, consulted an oracle, which revealed that the only way to appease Poseidon was to sacrifice their daughter, Andromeda, to the monster. Consequently, Andromeda was chained to a rock as an offering to Cetus.
Just as Andromeda was about to be sacrificed, the hero Perseus arrived. He fell in love with Andromeda and sought Cassiopeia's blessing to marry her before confronting the sea monster. Perseus successfully defeated Cetus, saving Andromeda and eventually marrying her.
Despite her daughter's rescue, Cassiopeia's hubris did not go unpunished. Poseidon placed her in the night sky chained to a throne in the constellation that bears her name. Cassiopeia is seen upside down for part of the year, symbolizing her punishment for her vanity.
Gold - reflects her beauty and opulence, Cassiopeia’s vanity is often depicted through luxurious golden tones.
